The High Point Police Department hires applicants for entry level police officer positions prior to Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification. In most cases, the applicant is hired as an employee and enjoys full pay and benefits while completing their BLET requirements. The High Point Police Department also offers non-paid sponsorship for BLET academy's held at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC). We also pride ourselves on training beyond the academy; in 2015 our officers completed over 17,000 hours of training. After completing 2 to 4 years of service as a patrol officer, High Point Police officers are eligible to apply for most specialized units including but not limited to K9, Traffic, Field Training, Vice, Street Crimes, Detectives, Housing, Tactical Team etc.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Protects life and property through patrolling assigned areas.
2. Answers calls for service from citizens regarding criminal activity and other matters.
3. Investigates crimes through contact with victims, suspects and witnesses; collecting, processing and storing evidence.
4. Interacts with other agencies in joint policing efforts.
5. Coordinates and participates in the prosecution of criminal offenders.
6. Obtains criminal complaints, serves warrants and makes arrests.
7. Monitors traffic to prevent accidents, enforces motor vehicle laws in the city.
8. Issues citations or warnings as appropriate.
9. Investigates traffic accidents.
10. Assists citizens, gives directions and promote community relations.
11. Maintain visibility and effectiveness in the Focused Deterrence topics and areas.
12. Interacts with social agencies, schools, families and juveniles regarding juvenile matters.
13. Documents activities with complete, clear and concise written reports and correspondence.
14. Maintains assigned equipment and take home vehicle. 
15. Maintains a level of physical fitness which meets job requirements.

At the completion of field training, you must demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret police problems and criminal evidence; prepare accurate reports; establish and maintain effective community relations on both an individual and group basis; use sound judgment in all situations; and perform routine maintenance or care of vehicles and equipment. You must also demonstrate the ability to multi-task and perform basic job functions in accordance with department standards.


  • Must be 21 years old by the completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • No felony, DWI or serious misdemeanor charges or convictions
  • Must have corrected 20/20 vision and not be color blind

  • Must pass polygraph & thorough background investigation

Graduation from high school or possession of GED is required. Applicants do not need prior experience before applying. Preference is given to law enforcement officers currently sworn in North Carolina, sworn out of state officers with 3 or more years of consecutive service, military veterans who were honorably discharged and college graduates.

Valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Requires working outdoors in elements and situations which may be hazardous and life-threatening. Will be required to work various shifts, holidays, overtime and on-call as assigned.
