Telling stories is central to Southern identity. No matter what region or ethnicity, Southerners pride themselves on their recountings of murders and hauntings, tall tales, shamelessly embellished histories, plaintive ballads, just-so stories, hilarious thigh-slappers, and parables infused with religious, moral or sometimes cynical meaning. In this acclaimed book by Pamela Petro, Sitting Up With the Dead (2001), we’ll follow the author on a tour of Southern places and explore different tales and their tellers in their natural environments. Participants will be encouraged to share favored stories as well!
