In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 23 - 29) the High Point Museum and the High Point Public Library hosted a picnic for their volunteers Saturday, April 29. National Volunteer Week was created in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order to establish the week as an annual celebration of volunteering.
During the past year, over 75 volunteers, ranging in age from teens to senior adults, worked 3,684 hours valued at $88,942.63 at the High Point Public Library and the High Point Museum. Library volunteers work in a variety of areas including helping with research in the Heritage Resource Center, shelving books and nonprint materials, shelf reading, preparing and helping with programs and working at book sales. Volunteers have served in almost every area of the Museum operations. They have given tours, answered phones, stuffed envelopes, sold souvenirs, inventoried artifacts, planned special events and assisted with historical demonstrations. Fundraising at both organizations is led by volunteers.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have an especially dedicated group of volunteers," Mary Sizemore, High Point Public Library Director, said. "They make it possible for the Museum and Library to offer services and programs that otherwise would be impossible. Simply put, volunteers make both institutions much better and we can't thank them enough."
