The High Point Public Library Foundation is pleased to announced that Elliot Engel will once again make a presentation for the community. His topic "A Light History of the English Language," one of his most popular presentations, will be held Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at the High Point Theatre, 220 E. Commerce Ave.

Dr. Engel traces the fascinating development of our English language from the Celts to the Anglo-Saxons to the invading French. Chaucer is given his proper place as the earliest named literary genius. Using anecdotes, analysis and large doses of humor, Professor Engel brings to life this most personal of topics which has always been as near as the tip of our tongue.

Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Dr. Engel now lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.  He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA.  Dr. Engel has taught at the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and Duke University.

The program is sponsored by the High Point Public Library Foundation, whose mission is to enhance the life of the community by providing the library with the resources essential to providing outstanding programs and services.

The program is free and open to the public. A reception with light refreshments will follow the program.
