[ARCHIVED] Dia de los Muertos Program Planned

Dia de los Muertos

  • ) For the third year, the High Point Museum and the YWCA Latino Family Center have partnered for a Dia de los Muertos event. The event will be held Saturday, November 2 from 10 a.m. until noon at the High Point Museum, 1859 E. Lexington Ave. The event is a hands-on learning experience and celebration of the Day of the Dead with altars, sugar skulls, kids activities, and a honoring of the loved ones that have passed away, a Latin American tradition brought to the High Point community by High Point families.

Even though many High Pointers may not be overly familiar with the Day of the Dead tradition, I think the spirit of the celebration will resonate with most people, Edith Brady, Museum Director, said. "Family tends to be highly valued in the South, so people can relate to the desire to honor and keep the memories of our ancestors alive."

Come learn and experience the Latinx culture and view our community's Dia de los Muertos altars and food offerings. Activities will include papel picado (paper decorations), paper flower making, storytelling, dancing, and face painting. Refreshments including sweet breads will be available. Language interpreters will be on site. The event is free and open to the public.

The Day of the Dead altars will be on display in the Museum October 29 - November 2. The altars are the most prominent feature in the celebration because they show the souls the way home. The altars make the souls (animas) feel welcome and show they have not been forgotten. Most altars feature photos, personal items, candles, food including candy and fruit, flowers, salt and religious elements.

To kick off this celebration, the High Point Museum is showing a family friendly movie inspired by this Mexican holiday Friday, November 1 at 6 p.m. Popcorn will be available and visitors are invited to bring an indoor picnic dinner. This event is free and open to the public.

The High Point Museum, a division of the High Point Public Library, is dedicated to sharing Greater High Point’s history, providing perspective for current issues, and strengthening the sense of community.

The City of High Point aims to serve as the catalyst for bringing together the community’s human, economic and civic resources for the purpose of creating the single most livable, safe and prosperous community in America. For more information on the City, visit www.highpointnc.gov
