“Science is fun, science is everywhere, science is for everyone — that’s what the North Carolina Science Festival is all about,” said Jonathan Frederick, Festival director.
The Museum will present North Carolina Piedmont Gold from 10 am to 4 pm in our Historical Park. Come learn about the science and history of gold mining in North Carolina. Gold was first discovered in NC in 1799, and recovering that gold still continues to this day. Learn about the chemistry of gold and the different technologies that have been used to help people get it from the ground and into their everyday lives. Also learn about the different kinds of rocks and minerals in the area and where else they found gold around the state. Visitors can try gold panning.
"We're excited to have the North Carolina Science Festival here," Michael Scott, Curator of Education at the High Point Museum, said. "We want to bring quality programs and activities to our city Museum that connect history to a variety of multi-disciplines including science and art."
Stones-n-Bones will be at the Library from 11 am to 12 pm. Join geologist Jonathan Fain as he welcomes you to the world of the past. Explore fossils and learn how scientists use geology to learn more about the history of North Carolina. Finish the program with a "dig" of your own as you sift through fossil dirt brought from Aurora - home of the Fossil Museum.
"We like to do programs that spark the imaginations of children with all types of interests," James Zola, Children's Services Manager at the High Point Public Library, said. "STEM programming is one area that we plan on focusing in the coming year. We are always looking for ways to help and collaborate with local schools, and science programs seem to fit that bill."
Founded in 2010, the North Carolina Science Festival is the first statewide science festival in the United States. During a two-week celebration each spring, the Festival brings hundreds of events (hosted by schools, colleges, libraries, museums, parks, businesses and other community organizations) together under one banner to recognize the economic, educational and cultural impact of science throughout North Carolina. The Festival is presented by the Biogen Foundation and produced by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
